Der Versuch, aus den überlieferten Bibelhandschriften die ursprünglichste Textversion zu ermitteln. Im AT gilt der sogenannte „Masoretische Text“ als Richtschnur, er ist allerdings teilweise über 2000 Jahre jünger als der zu ermittelnde „Urtext“ und kann daher Überlieferungsfehler enthalten. Atl. Textkritik versucht, durch den Vergleich mit anderen erhaltenen Textversionen solche womöglich fehlerhaften Stellen zu berichtigen. Bisweilen sind dabei Textänderungen nötig, die überhaupt kein Fundament in den alten Textzeugen haben, sondern nur auf Vermutungen basieren. Das NT ist wesentlich besser überliefert: Eine Vielzahl älterer Manuskripte sind erhalten. Allerdings gibt es keinen Ausgangstext mit einem dem Masoretischen Text vergleichbaren Stellenwert. Die ntl. Textkritik wägt daher Textvarianten aus unterschiedlichen Texttraditionen gegeneinander ab, um zu beurteilen, welche Variante die ursprünglichere ist.
